Petition to Redistribute GPA Scores

College Republicans at UC-Merced try to get support to redisribute "excessive" GPA scores to those who are struggling to fulfill graduation requirements. What kind of response do you think they get?

I've heard this one before many times. And it's a good one because no one wants grades to be redistributed. And if you accept the analogy then you must also accept that it's a bad idea for wealth to be redistributed as well.

But, the analogy doesn't work. For example, would you be against charitable donations to the poor? I don't think so. But, would you be against charitable donations of grades to struggling students? Probably would.

Do you donate money to the poor when you have it? I do; I used to give money to the same guy on the street corner in Chicago when I walked by him. I would plan to have a dollar or five dollars on me when I passed him. When I left that job, I gave him a ten, and said goodbye. I don't delude myself that I was helping him; I was being nice to him.

Would you give a share of your GPA to someone you knew who was struggling? Perhaps you would, if you could extract from him a promise to work harder next semester.

You might even contribute a small amount to a central clearinghouse that would redistribute it to other students you didn't know, if they were using criteria you agreed with, and/or were helping students with study skills, tutoring, etc.

I think the analogy does hold up. Those kids are rejecting the analogy because they are arguing that you work for your GPA, but they seem to think that most people who have money haven't earned it, somehow.
