A Round Lake-area schoolteacher has been arrested on a warrant that claims he sexually assaulted four children under the age of 13, Round Lake Beach Police officials said Tuesday. When priests are accused, we're told it's because of celibacy. But public school teachers are statistically twice as likely as priests to abuse children, what's their excuse?
Manuel Reyes, 55, was arrested Saturday at his home in the 9900 block of 69th Street in Kenosha after being charged with six counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, Deputy Police Chief Rich Chiarello said.

Reyes is held in the Kenosha County Jail on the $100,000 warrant, but is expected to go in front of a judge on Thursday to determine if he will waive extradition, Chiarello said.
If he waives extradition, he can be transferred to Lake County jail and could be in bond court as early as Friday, Chiarello said.
Reyes, a third-grade teacher at Raymond Ellis Elementary School in Round Lake Beach, allegedly inappropriately touched four victims under the age of 13 in an attempt to sexually gratify himself between Aug. 18, 2010 and March 23, 2011, Chiarello said.

If Only Teachers Were Allowed To Marry
This is the school district my kids would be in, if we weren't homeschooling them:

Yeah! And why aren't there protests against the Teacher's Unions?
A lot of people in jail need help getting the GED. Assuming Mr. Reyes is guilty (I'm not going to assume he is before the court decides on this), the jail system should get a lot of useful work out of him.
Which is good, because that's the only way he should ever be allowed to teach people ever again.
Ok for starters do any of you actually know him? I doubt it, he is one of the nicest guys I know and has worked with kids most of his life and has never had any type of incident remotely like this. Everybody that knows Manuel knows that this is bullshit. He has 5 kids, 2 grandchildren and had 2 more kids that used to live with them because they were kicked out of their house and none of them have ever been touched and i know this for a fact. you're assuming that he did it without knowing shit about him so whoever the stupid bitch is that obviously has nothing better to do than let people know their invalid opinion about things that really are none of their business should probably stop jumping to conclusions.
Oh and how would protesting the teacher's unions help any of this. you obviously don't know what the hell you're talking about. fuckin republicans
Reyes, you make a very poor case for your point.
I'm delighted -- honestly -- to hear you say he didn't do this.
I never said he did.
I pointed out a difference in how teachers are treated rather than priests.
Feel free to disagree with my point, but I didn't really say anything about your friend.
I personally know Mr. Reyes, and these charges are totally out of character for him.
Mr. Reyes teaches in an "English as a second language" classroom. Was there anything lost in translation when interviewing the kids?
I also know of the travesty of justice that occurred related to the McMartin daycare in the 1980s.

Don't be so hasty to condemn someone when the facts are not all available. Sometimes it's a prosecutor that's trying to make a name for himself (or herself), and the charges are not substantiated by the facts.
One of my mentors used to say, "The facts are not important." People believe what they perceive despite facts that are contrary to their perception.
Regarding teachers being treated differently than priests:
They absolutely are. The Church kind of swept it under the rug and transferred the priest to a different location, while the school immediately reports it, and the teacher is dragged through the street. Even if a teacher is found not guilty of a sex crime, there will always be the perception that the crime did occur and they got away with it. The teacher will have difficulty with others for the rest of their career because of that perception.
The McMartin Daycare thing was certainly a travesty; not sure how this helps Reyes, except to point out that not all accusations are true.
As I've noted before, I don't assume that this accusation is true.
"Facts are stubborn things," as John Adams famously said. They are very, very important, and can only be disregarded at our peril.
The Church kind of swept it under the rug and transferred the priest to a different location, while the school immediately reports it...
The first part of that is far, far, too true! The bishops did a shameful job managing that situation, and the result was disastrous for everyone.
But the school district had nothing to do with this prosecution, according to the story. They hadn't received the complaints, and weren't aware of the investigation. Evidently they weren't told because someone was afraid they'd tip Reyes off.
Even if a teacher is found not guilty of a sex crime, there will always be the perception that the crime did occur and they got away with it. The teacher will have difficulty with others for the rest of their career because of that perception.
This is true of almost every person accused of almost every crime.
"When priests are accused, we're told it's because of celibacy."
Really? Who says that?
And teachers are statistically twice as likely as priests to abuse children? Can you link these figures?
> re teachers being statistically twice as likely as priests to abuse children.
That makes perfect sense. I'd expect teachers to be significantly higher. With approximately 7.2 million teachers in the US, and 600K clergy (I'm using all clergy, not just priests), I'd expect the rate to be at least 10 to 1. If you only look at elementary/middle school, that drops the number of teachers to about 3 million. There are still significantly greater numbers of teachers than clergy, so the rate for teachers should be higher.
