The following exchange took place between Committee Member Senator Luechtefeld and a Truancy Officer:The relevant portion begins at about 5:00 into the following video:
Senator Luechtefeld: "If they register - will you go to any house and see if you can help?"
Truancy Officer: "Yes sir."
Senator Luechtefeld: "Even those that are doing a really good job?"
Truancy Officer: "That's right. And I'll know very quickly as I knock on the door the ones that are doing a great job won't let me go. They'll want me to come in. The ones that say we don't want you around I'll know to take further action."
Senator Luechtefeld: "I still don't see how this changes things just because they register."
Truancy Officer: "It gives me the name and opportunity."
What this Truancy Officer doesn't seem to understand is that government entities are accountable to the people, the people are not accountable to government entities.
This officer seems to suggest that all home educators should be considered guilty of neglect until they prove themselves innocent by allowing government agents into their homes with no evidence of wrongdoing. This is a dangerous assault on our Fourth Amendment rights. [Emphasis added.]
This is alarming in the extreme. Under no circumstances will I be registering my children with the state. Again we see in this video that SB 136 is not about improving education, but about gaining control.

Hi Paul - I'm totally with you on the civil disobedience. (Which is why I also never got a village sticker - story for another time.) In the event that a truant officer came knocking on my door, I would have no problem letting my 130lb German Shepherd do the talking for me. I think these guys (and gals, for that matter) have better things to do than harassing homeschoolers.
Like tracking down actual truants!
This testimony is just frightening. Seriously, if a truant officer really wanted to help, he or she is welcome to do some laundry. That would actually be a big help.
Sharon: Laundry. German shepherd. Great ideas!
I really do hope a truant officer comes knocking at my door, I'll tell him I just got home from my part time job & now I'm going over lessons with my 14 yr. old, but there's one thing I forgot & that is I forgot to walk my golden retriever, so would you mind Mr. truant officer. Here's his leash, thank you so much. I knew I could depend on you. Why don't we just put the truant officers to work. Amen to that one huh?
