(H/T: Gateway Pundit via Cold Fury) From KTUU:
Gov. Sarah Palin will resign her office in a few weeks, she said during a news conference at her Wasilla home Friday morning.Gateway Pundit reports that:
Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell will be inaugurated at the Governor's Picnic at Pioneer Park in Fairbanks on Saturday, July 25, Palin said.
There was no immediate word as to why she will resign, though speculation has been rampant that the former vice presidential candidate is gearing up for a run at the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.
Palin made the announcement flanked by Parnell and most, if not all, of her cabinet.
Parnell ran unsuccessfully against Rep. Don Young in the Republican primary last year.
The stunning announcement by Palin opens the floodgates for the 2010 gubernatorial race. Speculation that Palin might not seek re-election had fueled further conjecture of who might run.
... she was spending 80% of her time defending herself from the state-run press and bogus ethics complaints. She had been doing this for months and wanted to spend more time helping her state but there was no way she could effectively govern when she had to constantly defend herself. All I can say is, if this is the way that politics is to be conducted going forward, let the liberals beware.
** The governor has won 15 different bogus ethics complaints.
** The state of Alaska has spent $2 million defending the governor.
** It cost those liberals nothing to file the bogus complaints.
** Fighting the complaints has left her $500,000 in debt.

and so the blame game begins...you can rationalize her quitting all you want, but at the end of the day, that's exactly what she did. she's not out of the national picture the way Sanford is, but this is certainly an odd move given one of the main criticisms of Palin was her lack of experience.
I hate to say this, as I admire Sarah Palin personally and particularly for her pro-life stance, and I do believe she has gotten a bad rap in the media. BUT -- if she can't effectively govern her state because she's being "hounded by liberals," how on earth does she expect to govern the whole COUNTRY while being "hounded by liberals"?
As far as I know there were not any serious or sustained demands by her legislature or other officials for her resignation or impeachment (a la Blago, Spitzer, or Sanford), just a bunch of "bogus ethics complaints." This was HER decision and it came as a complete surprise.
I would understand completely if she resigned her office in order to take the public spotlight off her family for a while, and perhaps devote herself to caring for her youngest child and her new grandchild. If she decided to take a break from politics completely for a few years, then maybe try to make a comeback as a member of Congress or Senator, and see how that goes before attempting any further runs for president, that would be fine too.
However, to resign her office because those awful liberals aren't "allowing" her to do her job only confirms my belief that she was in way over her head running for vice president. Resigning as governor a year and a half early isn't going to help alleviate concerns about her inexperience, either.
Sarah Palin can still do a lot of good for the GOP, social conservatives, and pro-lifers, just not necessarily as a presidential candidate.
I guess Bobby Jindal could end up being the "last candidate standing" by the time 2012 rolls around.
Do you think spending two years in the US House of Representative would help Palin?
Ori, maybe four or six years in the House might do it, or a full Senate term. The problem with serving in the House is that you literally have to be in constant campaign mode since elections are only two years apart, closer to one year apart when you factor in the primary election cycle.
Upon reading the public statements Palin made today, it does not appear that she specifically blamed her decision to resign on attacks by liberals, but simply on her belief that since she had already decided not to run for another term as governor, she might as well step aside now for the good of the state and of her family, rather than hang on as a "lame duck" and lightning rod for criticism.
Also, if her family is indeed $500,000 in debt, she'd be better off with a private sector job that pays more than the $125,000 she was getting as Alaska governor.
All these are justifiable reasons for her decision, but again, I don't think it favors her running for president in 2012.
However, she is only 45 years old so she could still run for prez in 2020 or 2024 (she'd be 60 by then, same age as Hillary Clinton was in '08, and younger than Joe Biden is now).
Call me stupid but something in the story doesn't quite jibe with reality.
She is supposedly spending 80% of her time fighting ethics complaints, yet it seems everytime I turn around there'll be a story about her speaking somewhere in the lower 48 and what she has to say.
Can you say, "smokescreen"?
Beyond that I'll not speculate on what she's up to.
Following the surprise Palin announcement, website supporters are gathering across the nation to support Sarah Palin for President in 2012 can be found online at www.palin4pres2012.com
Our the website is in danger of crashing due to the flood of readers and supporters signing up to show their interest in a Palin Candidacy. The GOP establishment had better watch out, Sarah Palin and Ron Paul combined with the power of the internet will remove the stranglehold of GOP special interests and the elites who have brought the party to its knees in defeat in the 2008 elections.
I'm sorry, am I the only one who things that $500,000 of personal debt is no small chunk of change? And it's obvious the complaints were going to just keep coming in. I don't know her family's financial situation, but I wouldn't be surprised if she was taking so many speaking gigs throughout the country in order to earn some more money.
It's one thing to persevere through harsh criticism and outright bigotry in order to continue the job you were elected to do, it's another to keep mounting your own personal debt just to prove that you can "take the heat" and play with the big boys.
But that's just me, I guess.
