I won't have an Independence Day post tomorrow; it's looking like a busy day; not that today wasn't.
As I write this, the Extraordinary Boy, the Beauty Girl and I are watching 1776 on the other laptop (available for instant viewing on Netflix). It's my favorite patriotic movie. My bloggin' buddy Donald McLeary agrees, and fills out a whole top-ten list of patriotic movies.
My old buddy, Darius, offers a reflection on the complaints against the British Crown to be found in the Declaration, and wonders if some of them might be valid against the current administration.
Typically, over at Vox Nova, there's a post, as there is coincident with every patriotic holiday, warning us not to be too enthusiastic in our patriotism. Perhaps while they worry about the mote of patriotism in our eyes, they might take notice of the beam of Obamolotry in their own.
Finally, I offer my first attempt at video blogging: This is me, reading the Declaration of Independence:

1776, the only Patriotic movie!!!! (I'm a wee bit prejudiced in favor of the movie.)Although there are afew that come in a distant 2nd (Mini-series like John Adams & The Adams Chronicles are in a different class)
Did you watch the restored director's cut?
Either way, you are starting the youngsters pout right!
Paul
What made you upset over my post? I wrote it pointing out we need to engage the world with our faith. I asked people how they think they should do that in the US to make it better. How is that anti-patriotic? And -- where do I make an idol out of Obama?
I served so that you can party like it's 1776, so read the Declaration, enjoy a cup of TEA, watch some fireworks, and be as patriotic as you can possibly be!
Henry, I'm not upset.
But every patriotic holiday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and every other, someone at VN posts something suggesting that America really isn't so great after all, needs dramatic improvements, and we shouldn't go overboard on the holiday.
I have plenty of criticism for America, and I post it regularly; but I don't believe that patriotic holidays are the time for critical reflection. Independence Day, especially, is a time for celebration.
As for the Obamolatry at VN, your part in that seems to be to offer cover for the others, helping them to be a tad more respectable because of your presence, but I still haven't seen from anyone over there anything like a critical essay on Obama's continuing pro-abortion agenda.
At VN, you can't criticize Obama unless you criticize a long list of others including Bush, Cheney, and many more. You can't criticize Kmiec unless you also fault Weigel. In short, you guys are always changing the subject in order to provide cover for your support of the most pro-abortion president ever, and working to justify your contention, contrary to the bishops, that abortion is only one issue among many, and there's no obligation to fight legal abortion because that fight has been lost.
Well, Doug Kmiec and the boys at VN may have surrendered, but the rest of us haven't.
Nice tie.
