McCain Supporters For Obama

We've heard from "Catholics for Obama," a group of pro-abortion "Catholics" who are supporting Barack Obama. We've even heard from "Republicans for Obama," a group of pro-abortion liberal "Republicans" who are supporting Barack Obama.

Coming soon: "McCain Supporters for Obama," which, mark my words, will be a group of people who actually want McCain to win, probably including McCain himself, guiding the McCain campaign into a course that will ensure McCain's enduring legacy as the 21st-Century Bob Dole.

And what will that course be? To try to win by throwing social conservatives under the bus and appealing instead to liberals.

Among many others, Feddie documents the trend here. The short version is, as the time for an announcement draws near, the two names getting the most play as likely choices for McCain's running mate are pro-aborts Tom Ridge and Joe Lieberman.

The problem I see with this is that people are looking for any excuse to support Obama and ignore abortion. The Democrat Platform stops just short of celebrating abortion as preferable to childbirth (while strongly resisting any suggestion that abortion might in any way be a negative thing), and people like Doug Kmiec and many, many "Catholic" liberals hail it as a wonderful step forward for the Democratic Party. Of course, these are people who really don't object to abortion in any practical way, and would happily accept the promised increase in the abortion regime that Obama represents.

(And don't come in here trying to tell me that you're pro-life if you support Barack Obama. Obama supporters are invited to express their true opinions of their candidate's record and promises on abortion.)

The point is, after all his years of crossing the aisle to work with the other side, of McCain-Feingold, McCain-Kennedy, McCain-Lieberman, after all his many times dissing conservatives, if McCain can't even win over "Republicans for Obama," how can he hope to win over independents and Democrats?

McCain must rally his shaky base. He should have done this in the spring after he clinched the nomination, but instead he toured Europe.

Now it's late summer, and the people who should be getting ready to donate and campaign for McCain are still unsure about him. And he's still giving us reason to be.

If McCain does indeed chose a pro-abort politician, then we will have the USSA as a result.

Based on McCain's statements at the Saddleback program last night, I think he's decided to not have a pro-abort VP on the ticket. If he wants any chance to win in November, he'd better not.
