... before he apologizes again.
Pepperdine Prof. Douglas Kmiec has now officially become America's Number-One Catholic apologist for supporting abortion rights:
...it is abundantly clear from our conversation that Obama shares a common aspiration to reduce the incidence of abortion.Obama is blatantly lying to Kmiec, but it's OK, because Kmiec knows it. Kmiec isn't fooled by Obama's lies; he choosing to believe them. Doug Kmiec, however he may have gotten a widespread reputation as a "conservative" and "pro-life" scholar, has now put his morality (and his humility) on hold and has put his reputation at the service of the most virulently pro-abortion nominee ever to seek the White House.
How? Obama is committed to encouraging "responsible sexual behavior," discouraging unwanted pregnancies, promoting adoption as a more viable, affordable and appealing option than it presently is, and putting off limits in a manner consistent with the law as the justices see it, late-term abortion. Obama will not exclude abortion from medical coverage to fulfill a health exception "rigorously defined."
Kmiec, I notice, makes reference to "pro-lifers like me." Ha, I say. With "pro-lifers" like Doug Kmiec, the unborn of America will continue to be at risk for decades to come.
I just hope he never becomes pro-liberty. Can you imagine how that would look? If Kmiec wanted to defend liberty by the same means he claims to want to defend life, he'd advocate for the repeal of the Bill of Rights, and instead tell us to simply work with governmental officials on a case-by-case basis whenever they're faced with the hard moral choice of infringing on someone's liberty. Which would, in fact, make him the ideal choice to be one of Obama's Supreme Court picks.
Meanwhile, Jay at Pro Ecclesia is seeing red, Anne at Backyard Conservative is suffering, and to Feddie at Southern Appeal, Kmiec is dead.
We also note that Kmiec's by-line now includes the fact that he was controversially denied communion by a Catholic priest somewhere for his advocacy of Obama. If a priest ever denied me communion, it would be an occasion for soul-searching, for consultation with that priest and others, and with my bishop. It would be a matter over which I would ardently seek reconciliation. It would not go on my resume. To Kmiec, it is a badge of honor, a sign of heroic sacrifice. God help us, that'll probably become the faddish new sign of liberal courage.
If you read the posts I've linked, you'll see that a number of commenters have suggested that either Kmiec's powers of reasoning have left him, or else his sanity. I attribute his campaign for Catholic support of Obama to another factor: Kmiec has "laid down the melancholy burden of his" morality; he has actively chosen to abandon the pro-life cause, and instead devote himself to giving intellectual cover to liberal Catholics who want to support a pro-abort Democrat but for whatever reason desire to continue to pretend to care about abortion.

If it did, you should be proud. It would mean that your Priests and Bishops consistently refuse communion in such cases.
Of course, unless you believe the Catholic Church is right, you should probably refuse communion when offered by a Priest or a Bishop anyway.
